Black Country Flag is a flag in England. It has three symbols: the red cross of Saint George, the Stafford knot and the black country crook. The Black Country Crook symbolizes that people in this area are hardworking. 

The Stafford Knot represents industry and craftsmanship. It is a well-known flag in the country and has a whole host of history behind it. 

And finally, the red cross of Saint George represents Christianity which was essential to many residents of this region because Protestants persecuted them during times like the English Civil War when King Charles I was executed for treason against Parliamentarians who wanted democracy instead of an absolute monarchy.

One

Black Country is part of the West Midlands, located between the north and west of Birmingham. However, there is a lot of controversy over where the area starts and ends. The government’s definition of the Black Country in Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton, and the spaces between.

In the height of the Industrial Revolution, the heavy machinery used was a substantial contributing factor to why the buildings and air were steeped in black ash. This helped the term Black Country become coined; the coal used in foundries and steel mills turned all the buildings black, making it known for the colour.

It is highly debated where the actual centre of the Black County is; some people argue that Dudley is the “capital” of the area, whilst others disagree and say that Cradley Heath is the centre. With this argument comes the discussion regarding the Black Country being anywhere within a five-mile radius of Dudley Castle, for the centre we mean.

Did you know that the Black Country has a few famous names that it has offered over the years; Lenny Henry, Beverley Knight, Noddy Holder, Julie Walters and Robert Plant. Some of these famous names have opinions on the Black Country and where it starts/ ends. It is one of the constant controversies surrounding the Black Country region.

When the Black Country first began to emerge, literally from the ashes, early notes about the area were incredibly degrading. For example, the idea the streams had no fish, trees had no leaves and were black, and finally, it was likened to, on many occasions, a black wasteland. Desecrated land by the spoil heaps and furnaces, you can almost see a bleak and black landscape, not fit for life.

The area is known for its coal and iron ores that deployed black blooms across the region; metalwork thrived during the Civil War, providing the country with swords, pikes and guns for the troop of King Charles I.  Feeding into the need for these giant iron ores and consistently providing work to keep the fires burning and the soot escaping.

Little extra fun fact, Queen Victoria, when travelling through the Black Country, is reported to have closed the heavy curtains across the carriage so as not to breathe in the air. She was also offended by the industrial landscape and wanted to be saved from looking at it. When she travelled by carriage, it took a long time to move through Black Country, and it was a long time to sit in the dark with no airflow. 

Eight

July 14th is traditional “Black Country Day” because it falls on the anniversary of the invention of the world’s first steam engine. The Newcomen Engine created in 1712 is famously from the Black Country region.

Remember The Titanic? The anchors and chains for this ship were made in the Netherton in the Black Country; famously, the ship chose to have them made in the Black Country because they were known for their incredible craftsmanship in iron. 

Ten

Finally, one of the most influential families across the globe came from the Black Country. Among America’s founding fathers were Lawrence and Cassandra Southwick; initially, they were from Black Country and moved to the American colonies in 1627 (history states the dates may be slightly wrong), first settling in Salem but later moving to New York. 

It is said their descendants include Winston Churchill and the US president Richard Nixon and Solomon Southwick. He was the printer of the first copies of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Finally, Alfred Southwick is also a relative of the original Southwick’s, and he created the electric chair to remove the need for hangings.
