Sayings You Will Only Hear In The Black Country

We love the Black Country, its people, the community but what we love more than anything is its bostin’ accent and sayings.
Here are just a few saying you only hear in the Black Country & how you might use them..

- WHAS ‘ER WHANT?
Example In Use – From Pride and Prejudice –
“Oh Mr Darcy, please come here, at most haste” spoke Elizabeth brightly.
Perched comfortably on the toilet, with the latest edition of the Racing Post clasped to his hands and a roll up squeezed between his lips,
Mr Darcy glumly though “Whas ‘er whant?”
- AR CUD ATE A SCABBY OSS!
Example In Use – From The Express and Star 26th December 1974 – “Tommy Cowpatt (possibly pictured above) had been on hunger strike for a total of 9 days now. Weight falling off him at such a drastic rate, but still smiling through, “Tomo” was a true hero to his cause. “Arm gunna stay off the fittle until they bring back the imperial system. Bannana’s in pounds not grams. But arm bein honest now mucker, Ar cud ate a scabby oss!”

- WHEEGE UN’S MARNE?
Example In Use – Winnie the Pooh and Piglet at the Car Boot by A.A.Milne –
Piglet trotted back to Pooh, smiling from ear to ear and swinging a blue carrier bag in his arms. Catching up with Pooh bear, Piglet declared “All these DVDs are knocked off, £1 each, so I’ve got us 10 quid’s worth. Pooh didn’t waste any time looking through them and askin Piglet “Wheege un’s marne?”

In Dudley, the Black Country in The West Midlands, some newsagents had a drop of 76% sales of The Sun. Asking local binman Bernard Sprout what he thought of the “nudes”, He open up an old edition, declaring to his work collegues “Well that’s it ay it!”
- YOW’M AVIN A LOFF
Example In Use – The 2008 Arnold Schwarzenegger action film “I Shoot you with Bullets”.
Scene 34 – Los Angeles Night Club “The Serpent”. Retired assassin Mac Irvine is working the door tonight. It’s a warm summers night. Mac is feeling sweaty in his shirt and collar. A drunk business man laughing with an attractive young lady, bumps into Mac.
Mac – “Hey be careful please.”
Business Man – “Hey you be careful, you… you big gorilla”
Mac – “Hey now , no one calls me a gorilla, not even my mutha, God rest her sole”
B.M. – “Your tall like a gorilla, no wait a really tall building, and not a good building. A smelly old building, you gorill……..
Mac picks up the drunk with one hand and pick him up 2 feet off the floor.
Mac – “You offended me and my feelings, now I will kill you”
